If working on the rig floor does not suit you well, we suggest to consider the Deck Career Path (Path 2). The Deck Crew consists of a Crane Operator as the team leader and well trained specialists that carry out marine or deck related operations revolving around the boarding of equipment, containers and/or personnel to/from the deck (ship board operations). May entail working with cranes and safety at sea operations.
Some of the essential sub-duties of the department include:
• Deck maintenance and repair.
• Conducting emergency drills.
• Safe station keeping of the vessel.
• Operation and monitoring of the dynamic positioning system.
• Operation of all functions in the ballast control system.
• Emergency preparedness.
• Equipment inspection and repair.
• Maintain documentation in compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Movement of equipment, supplies, containers, tubulars and other materials utilized in the operation of the drilling unit.
• Coordination of helicopter and workboat operations.
Every position is described below in broad lines.
1. PAINTER
The painter is part of the drill crew and the person responsible for cleansing of deck area and for painting where necessary to upkeep the exterior appearance of the rig. The work is never ending and involves working at heights.
The job tends to be a good solution for those who are interested in entering the Oil and Gas industry but who lack experience in the oil field. An excellent starting point to proceed into other positions from the deck crew!
Responsibilities
- Coordinate paint products and its correct use
- Work according to regulations delegated by the Maintenance Foreman
- Use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
Requirements
Painters will most likely hang with safety harnesses from the rig in order to paint the outside of the offshore unit. Therefore he/she must be comfortable working at heights.
Furthermore, a good physical health is a requisition as working long hours outdoors in all weather conditions will be part of day to day circumstances.
On the job, the painter will learn how to manage a needle gun and buffer for painting.

2. MAINTENANCE FOREMAN
3. ROUSTABOUT
As a Roustabout you will gain know-how by executing a variety of jobs around the deck floor. Depending on the necessity, the activities you will come across may vary from unskilled manual labor to more skilled as well as specialized work.
Responsibilities
- Offload and back load cargo (equipment and supplies) or personnel from vessels, other offshore units and/or helicopters.
- Assist Crane Operator with the placement and relocation of equipment and supplies throughout the rig, and with storing and retrieving materials. In particular, guide the crane when equipment or containers are being moved on the deck.
- Execute household activities to keep pipe deck, camp sites and other main deck areas clean and tidy. Such as washing and cleaning up of the drilling rig, clean mud pits and drains, in addition to chipping and painting.
- Carry out minor maintenance and repairs
- Assist in mixing chemicals and drilling mud, and take out drilling core samples.
- Assist other members of the rig (e.g. Welders, Mechanics, Electricians and Roughnecks). Consequently, the Roustabout may be involved in slotting, welding and inserting casing screens.
- Member of the Emergency Fire Team and Heli-Deck Team
Requirements
Although no previous education is required and on-the-job training will provide familiarization with the correct lifting procedures as well as rigging and slinging techniques (to mention only a few), this job is great for people with experience in mechanics.

Crane Operator
4. TRAINEE CRANE OPERATOR
When having shown a firm commitment and job competency as a Roustabout, the next wise step would be to obtain the correct qualification and training to operate cranes, and grow into the position of a Trainee Crane Operator.
Your work shall be to assist the Crane Operator in controlling and commanding of all crane operations in the best possible manner. Sitting from inside the cab you will guide and move equipment, materials and supplies. Eventually, through experience and on-the-job training, you will be capable of taking the lead in case the Crane Operator is absent.
Responsibilities
- Train Roustabouts on the correct manual handling and lifting techniques.
- Supervise the execution of work performed by Roustabouts according to company policy, safety guidelines and regulatory procedures, and assist in planning their work.
- Guide cranes when equipment or containers are being moved on the deck. In absence of Crane Operator, operate the cranes equipment to hoist materials and equipment from the rig and onto ocean vessels.
- Perform regular inspections before lifting operations to verify the condition of cranes, slings, cables and straps.
Requirements
Familiarization on the Roustabouts’ duties is a necessity as is a firm knowledge and education on how to operate cranes for safety (e.g. G5Certificate for Norwegian Waters). The normal requisition is three to four years of practical experience on board a drilling vessel.
Besides for an acceptable physical condition, the Trainee Crane Operator needs to be accurate in working in close quarters.

5. CRANE OPERATOR
The Crane Operator is qualified and sufficiently experienced to take on the responsibility of managing all crane operations performed between the rig and offshore supply vessels. From inside the cab, he/she shall control the cranes with the support of a Trainee Crane Operator and Roustabouts.
Responsibilities
- Perform pre-operational inspection, and calculate crane capacities and weight to prepare for
rigging and hoisting.
- Manage the exchange of supplies between the rig and the supply vessels by performing unloading and reloading operations.
- Manoeuvre cranes to lift, move, position or place supplies, such as castings, pipes, rig equipment, storeroom, containers, tubular and groceries, on the deck floor.
- Plan the work of Roustabouts/Ass. Crane Operator and supervise the execution of their job according to company policy, safety guidelines and procedures.
- In constant communication with Rig Management and Boat Captain to assess safety for loading and unloading operations.
- Plan and perform routine maintenance work such as cleaning and lubricating cranes.
- The Crane Operator may be needed in other areas of the deck.
He/she will direct the Fire Response Team in emergency operations, and assist mechanics or electricians where necessary.
Requirements
Familiarization on the Roustabouts’ duties is a necessity as is a firm knowledge and education on how to operate cranes for safety (e.g. G5Certificate for Norwegian Waters). A valid Certificate of Qualification is required as is the experience of an Assistant Crane Operator.
The job involves working at great heights, often outdoors and exposed to various weather conditions. A good physical health is a requirement.

6. BARGE ENGINEER
